Ornament and Crime
March 30 – June 22, 2024

Alberta Craft Council (Calgary)

“Ornament is wasted labour power and hence wasted health.” Loos suggests that to create in the most simplistic form saves time and money, therefore simplicity must be satisfying aesthetically due to the increased cost saving for not only the worker but society overall.

One cannot measure the primal need of an artist to create, for we often conceive work that will never be seen by others. We use art and ornament to showcase our values, memories and beliefs – a visual translation of the world around us. Creating with reckless abandonment (and adornment) returns us all to a time in our lives that was free of the restrictions of society. Expression of ideas in the most elementary and exquisite of forms.

My own creative process is exploratory and experimental which often results in both an overly complicated process and often end result. I hope you enjoy my Soapweed Bouquet built from nearly 300 fragile glass flowers and 50 glass moths all made from bottle glass.
